Our poor little guy caught his first cold on his two month birthday. Mateo and I got sick at the same time and Ilya caught the cold the next day. The first night was the worst: Ilya and I slept about two hours because we kept jumping up to check on Mateo who was having difficulty breathing through his stuffy/runny nose. (Babies don’t learn to breathe through their mouths until they’re about 4 months old.) Thanks to our hard-working humidifier and my mom’s good care (she risked infection by coming over to help take care of us), Mateo and I are feeling better, though still residually sick. Ilya, who’s one day behind, is hitting the peak of the cold now, poor sweetie. And, silly man that he is, he keeps apologizing for being sick–as if it were something blame-worthy!
On the brighter side, Mateo’s now strong enough that he can wiggle to a sideways position in the crib even when swaddled like a burrito. Unfortunately, this means he now sometimes hits his head or feet against the crib rails. We didn’t put any bumpers in his crib because anything soft in the crib is a SIDS risk….but perhaps we need to rethink that now. Thoughts/suggestions?

If he can wiggle sideways, would he be able to wiggle himself away from the bumper? I guess you wouldn’t want him to bump his head.

I’d also like to say that I’m soooo glad that I wasn’t the cause of Mateo’s first cold. I would have felt so guilty if I passed on the germies!

Just read about Mateo’s cold. Poor Mateo. James and Jo used to get some terrible colds too when they were infants. We always turned to the reliable aspirator which they hated. I remember James screaming and turning his head away whenever it would come near his nose. LOL But the fact is that they do work great to help clear the nose. I never used bumper pads with either of my kids and I never had all the fancy monitors either. When James or Jo woke up they let us know that they were awake. I could see having something like that if you lived in a 4000 SF home and the nursery was far away but most homes are smaller and do not require anything more then a good ear. Anyway, I hope all is well with all of you. Hugs and kisses to Mateo.

Mateo didn’t like the nasal aspirator any more than James did, hee hee. Thankfully we’re all better now and breathing easy! 🙂
