Ooh, Jupiter!

Today, while returning from my grandmother’s place with Mateo (we went over for a visit), Mateo got a decent look at the night sky for probably the first time in a long while. We rarely are out walking when the sun is down, and with the time change this past weekend we were out much later than usual.

The whole way back, Mateo was fascinated with the night sky. He kept pointing at the sky — at the full moon, and at Jupiter in particular — and going “ooh!”. For reference, Jupiter is the brightest object in the night sky right now, second only to the Moon (possibly to Venus, too, but it only comes out in the morning during sunrise and isn’t really visible).

The night sky showing Jupiter and the Moon

This was really endearing to me, since I’ve spent at least two whole hours over the last couple of weeks out on the street with a telescope, looking at Jupiter. I’ve used my (relatively dinky) telescope sparingly in the last decade of owning it, but recently took it out having seen a bright object in the sky and suspecting its jupiterness. Instead of just a clearer view of the same old dot in the sky (the usual consequence of looking at a star, which is too far to really be enlarged), here I saw something different. Jupiter was not just a point — it was clearly a circle. And a circle with at least some bands of reddish color to it, to boot. And not only was it there alone, but it was accompanied by four little dots: its satellites. I was blown away by the belated discovery that my telescope is actually good for something, and basically spent good chunks of an hour in the following few days staring at Jupiter some more, and showing it off to others.

So for Mateo to see Jupiter — in his own, not-quite-11-month way — is really exciting for me. I hope he ends up more serious about astronomy. And I definitely share his “ooh” sentiment about Jupiter.

Halloween 2009: Darth Mateo

Mateo kept taking his helmet off, but we did manage to snap one picture in his full Darth Mateo glory!  We went for a short walk, stopped by a few doors, and mostly hung out with family.  A very nice, mellow first Halloween!

Mateo’s much delayed 9 month pediatrician appointment stats

Today 10.5 month old Mateo finally had his 9 month appointment with his new pediatrician, Dr. Bourne.  Dr. Bourne is fabulous!  He’s got such a great way with kids, even as little as Mateo.

So Mateo is in the 25th percentile for head size (go, brain, go!), 50th percentile for height and 50th percentile for weight.  He also finally got his polio vaccine and the flu vaccine (the regular kind).

In still more exciting news, Mateo now recognizes the word “papa” (he’ll usually point to Ilya) and seems to be trying to say gatito or gato (kitty or cat)–Ilya, I and Tia Cristy have all heard something that sounds gato-ish when he’s been looking at pictures of cats.  Very exciting developments!

gatito, ventilador y luna

Mateo definitely recognizes three words: gatito (kitty), ventilador (referring to the ceiling fan) and luna (moon, but only the crescent shaped version in Sandra Boynton’s books).  We can tell he knows these words because he’ll look and/or point at the objects when you ask: “donde esta _____?”

Of course, if you ask “donde esta mama?” or “donde esta papa” he just kind of gives you a blank stare or ignores you.  Well, I guess everybody has their own priorities!

toys are not just for eating

This morning Mateo learned how to spin his top (not just by rotating it with his hand, which he’d already been doing, but by pushing down on the pump).

This evening, after a glorious session of knocking down block towers, Mateo actually picked up a block and, after many tries, stacked it on top of another block.

Plus, he’s discovered that stuffed animals are for hugging.

Such a cute and amazing growing boy.

Walking Mateo

Here’s a short video of Mateo walking–or, in Ilya’s terms, a short video of Mateo preparing to be a member in a crocodile-waving marching band.  Either way, you can see he’s gotten fairly good in the past few weeks.  Those steps, though still not totally steady, are much more certain.

Radio Flyer

Recorded on August 29th. We had just bought Mateo a Radio Flyer walker wagon, and this is from him learning how to use it.

The walker wagon, by the way, is absolutely wonderful. It’s really, really well built, and feels like a great toy.
